The PedalAid app is helping to turn the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trail into the UK’s first SMART cycling route.
The app sets regular distance challenges for the community to aim at. Every user’s journey along the cycle route contributes to the overall target. A nominated local Isle of Wight charity receives a donation based on the distance achieved, and if the target is reached the amount is doubled.
There are also personal rewards as well. Every month there will be a prize draw - and the further you ride the more entries you will have, so more chances to win a lovely prize.
Access the leaderboards to see how your personal distance compares to other riders. Or set up a team and see if your group can get to the top of the table.
The Guide section of the app provides practical information about the routes, as well as information about the rich wildlife and fascinating history of the area.
From the app dashboard you can select if you want to track journeys automatically or not. If journey tracking is enabled the app uses GPS to determine your location when the app is running in the background. We have used GPS in a power-efficient way - only checking location if you have moved a significant distance until you get near the cycle route at which point it checks more regularly. However, as with all apps that use location, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
